what our resource assessment specialists
can do for you...
FPInnovations' Resource Assessment Group supports the forest products
industry in maximising the value from the present resource by studying
attributes of various species and by determining the impact of forest
management decisions on wood characteristics, product quality, value
recovery and marketing potential. These services build upon knowledge
and expertise gained through our Resource
Assessment Research Program.
FPInnovations services
- Evaluation of major tree species characteristics and
end-uses including wood density, annual variations of growth,
wood defects, fibre quality, physical and mechanical properties.
- Development of mill specific information on internal
stem and log characteristics before processing, to increase product
quality and value.
- Assessment of under-utilised wood species for various
applications and uses.
- Comparison of wood characteristics and application potentials
from native and foreign species.
- Microscopic identification of native and foreign wood
species.
- Support to tree genetists and tree breeders towards the
production of wood having superior end-use characteristics.
state-of-the-art equipment
To achieve their research objectives and provide the required
services to industry and government, including on a fee-for-service
basis, our Resource Assessment specialists have access to modern
equipment and instruments, including:
- CT scanning
equipment operational in 2002 at the Western and Eastern laboratories
- X-Ray densitometer (to analyse intra and inter-ring variations
in growth ring and wood density)
- Research microscopes
- Destructive and non-destructive analyser systems (NDE) including
E-Computer (to determine MOE of lumber), Sylvatest and Stress
Wave Systems (for strength and defect detection in lumber and
standing trees)
