To achieve their research objectives and provide technical services,
including on a fee-for-service basis, our Sawmilling specialists
have access to modern equipment and instruments, including:
- Portable scanner, equipped with two axis and true shape scanning
capabilities (Eastern Region). This type of scanner defines
shape characteristics of the roundwood delivered to a sawmill
and create a resource database. The database is used as input
toFPInnovations' OptitekTM software
for simulation of mill-specific modernisation scenarios.
- Band and circular saws
expertise through strategic tools
Over the years, our Lumber Manufacturing Group has developed key
technologies, including software packages, to maximise value for
the lumber industry. Most of these tools are available
for members at no cost (except for the access key).
- OptitekTM
- a log breakdown simulation software used
to quantify benefits generated from various possible mill modernisation
scenarios.
- PEP -
a profit evaluation package used to prioritise and calculate the
sensitivity of several production parameters such as log cost,
lumber recovery, productivity, lumber value and production cost.
- Horsepower
Calculator - a software package to calculate horsepower requirements
and optimise saw and chipping tool efficiency.
- Video Tooth Inspector VTI®
- a system for inspecting and measuring saw tooth
geometry. (Also available to non-members)
- Bandsaw Active Guide
and Monitoring System - a self-aligning guide system used
to improve cutting accuracy, decrease target sizes, increase feed
speeds and fibre recovery. (Also available to non-members)
- MSR Tool
Kit - a decision-aid tool designed to improve product quality
and recovery from the machine grading operation.
- Feeds
& Speeds e-Course - an online training tool available
on this website, aimed at designing and optimizing bandsaw and
circular saws for many sawing applications.
