lumber manufacturing

an evaluation of wood kiln control practices

This report, published in April 2003 by FPInnovations (formerly Forintek) and by CANMET Energy Technology Centre (CETC) - Varennes, prompted by environmental concerns about ways to cut energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, analyses current softwood drying practices in Canada and identifies related R&D needs. It is commonly acknowledged that implementing advanced control systems is a good way to reduce energy consumption while improving softwood lumber quality. The general objective of the study is therefore to present a synthesis of the main trends in the development of control systems and to identify the factors limiting their implementation.
