The purpose of FPInnovations' Building Systems research is to provide
optimum wood solutions to meet performance demands in targeted markets
and construction end-uses.
FPInnovations' Building Systems program includes the following complementary
research areas:
In each area, the objective is to document the performance of wood-based
materials and systems for the benefit of engineers, architects and
builders, as well as for various committees and organisations responsible
for materials standards and building codes, both in Canada and abroad.
Public concerns regarding fire safety, structural safety and durability
affect wood product markets, most significantly through regulations
that can unreasonably limit the use of wood in construction. The
success of the forest industry in maintaining and expanding its
markets depends on its ability to deliver cost-effective products
and systems that out-perform competition from non-wood materials.
Current trends indicate that engineered wood products and prefabricated
building systems will increasingly play a role in this respect.
Through its research activities, Forintek supports the industry
by providing scientific evidence on the performance of wood products
and building systems.
Of particular significance is the work performed by FPInnovations in
developing the ATHENATM, a sophisticated software used
by engineers, architects, builders, and regulatory agencies to assess
the full environmental life cycle of buildings using various construction
materials (wood, steel, concrete). This led to the creation, in
1997, of The
ATHENATM Sustainable Materials Institute.

Throughout the year, our Building Systems specialists organize
and participate in various technology transfer activities, with
a clear focus towards our members. For specific needs, we also offer

with strict confidentiality guidelines.
