cedars working group
FPInnovations' Cedars Working Group (CWG), launched in 2000, includes
members from the forestry sector, primary and secondary wood products
manufacturers, associations, research organizations, and government.
The CWG's mandate is to exchange information and foster synergistic
research on the properties and products of the North American cedars
(Thuja and Chamaecyparis species). Six directions
for research and development have been identified in which the technical
support base for forestry and forest products needs strengthening.
-
Growing Durability – by selecting planting stock for
maximum decay- and insect-resistance.
-
Enhancing Service Life – by reducing the leaching and
detoxification of extractives.
-
Natural Pesticides – for application to other wood species.
-
Fine Chemicals –for pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and
fragrances.
-
Reduced Cost Pulping – by removing corrosive compounds
and toxic effluent components.
-
Color Control/Stability – by preventing polymerization
or polymerizing extractives in situ.
By focusing the combined efforts of industry, associations, governments,
and researchers on these six directions, the CWG will accomplish
the research necessary to capitalize on North America’s Cedar resource
and optimize it for the future.
