VTI-Video Tooth Inspector® The
VTI-Video Tooth Inspector® (VTI) is a quality control
tool for sawmill filing rooms to inspect and measure circular saw
teeth with great precision providing information vital in ensuring
proper saw tip geometry. Improving saw tip accuracy can lead
to improved saw performance and allow for reductions in saw kerf
and lumber target sizes, with the corresponding increases in fibre
recovery and potential profits.
The VTI utilizes a video camera to provide a magnified image of
each tooth tip. This tooth image can be automatically measure
by the system to verify proper tip geometry. The magnified
image can also be inspected manually with the assistance of adjustable
reference lines. The ease and speed of use of the system make it
suitable for quality control in the filing room. With the VTI, FPInnovations
has developed a system which retains the useful inspection capabilities
of previous video based systems, and also provides fast and accurate
tooth measurements.
The use of the VTI system in combination with analyses of sawing
variations constitutes a powerful tool to enhance sawing accuracy,
and to reduce saw kerf and target sizes. The VTI system provides
sawmills with the following benefits:
- Magnified tooth images for visual inspection of grinding defects
- Automatic measurements of important tooth geometry
- Quality control of the tooth grinding process
- Most accurate method available for checking saw grinding equipment
- Training tool for new saw filers
- Improved sawing accuracy and reduced downtime caused by problems
with tooth grinding
