what our wood protection and durability specialists
can do for you...
With increasing expectations from export markets and with attributes
expected of value-added products, wood protection and durability
has become a major issue in market access and growth. The wood industry
needs to ensure the protection of its products during manufacturing,
storage and transportation, as well as durability over the products'
life cycle.
Our specialists have the expertise to deal with specific issues
related to wood stain and decay, conditions leading to the development
of fungi, effects of biological agents on the physical and mechanical
properties of wood or the quality of wood fibre, wood protection
and preservation.
FPInnovations services
- Isolation and identification of micro-organisms causing
sapstain or decay in wood.
- For fast identification see: Procedure
for obtaining and shipping mold samples.
- Efficacy studies of antisapstain chemical and preservative
treatment through a variety of standard and non-standard tests
(lab tests, ground contact decay tests, accelerated tests, field
tests).
- Diagnosis of problems and troubleshooting related to
sapstain and decay fungi or molds in wood products (panels, lumber,
engineered wood, value-added products, doors and windows, etc.).
- Assessment of the effects of micro-organisms on the physical
and mechanical properties of wood, or the quality of wood fibre.
- Assessment of the resistance of wood products to biodeterioration.
- Diagnosis and quantification of decay or sapstain contamination
in logs.
- Recommendation of methods to reduce or prevent the development
of coloration and decay in both hardwood and softwood lumber.
- Chemical analysis of treated wood.
- Treatability tests of wood species, new processes, new
preservatives or preservative additives.
- Weathering tests of wood products, surface treatments
and surface finishes.

expertise through strategic tools
Over the years, our experts in Wood Protection and Durability have
built a unique Fungus Culture Collection
of forest and wood related fungi, including a comprehensive
database listing more than 2,250 isolates. We also have a searchable
database of literature concerning mold growth on building materials.
A Durability
Website, maintained jointly with the Canadian Wood Council,
provides information to specifiers and users to assist in maximizing
the service life of wood products.
