FPInnovations' Value-added Group covers a wide variety of technical
areas: assessment of specific wood species for use in specific value-added
products (both structural and appearance); drying techniques adapted
to value-added products; process and product development, improvement
for the production of components and finished products; investigation
of market opportunities and desirable attributes of value-added
products. In many cases, specialists in other Forintek research
departments are brought in to ensure that all relevant expertise
is applied to projects for clients.
FPInnovations services
- In-plant assistance to solve problems related to manufacturing
efficiency, production techniques, product quality and specific
processes such as drying and gluing operations.
- Information and recommendations regarding technology,
processing methods and value-added product design and improvement.
- Testing and evaluation of products relative to specific
end-use requirements, including those of the Canadian Construction
Materials Centre (CCMC), with respect to codes and standards.
- Customised training services can be provided on-site
or at Forintek on a request basis or at the facilities of a Forintek
partner.
- Process optimisation of secondary rough mill operations
by computer simulation. Forintek has access to different software
(ROMI-CROSS, ROMI-RIP) and offers computer simulation service
to optimise cutting operations in a secondary rough mill.

FPInnovations is also providing technical support to Canadian wood product
manufacturers through the Value to Wood Program funded by natural
Resources Canada. Based on knowledge and technology developed through
this federal initiative as well as through specific provincial
programs in British
Columbia Alberta, Saskatchewan and Quebec, our value-added specialists
offer hands-on technology transfer services.

To perform their research and provide technical services, including
on a fee-for-service basis, our Value-added experts have access
to a variety of modern equipment. This includes:
- Complete kiln drying facilities including conventional dehumidifier
and superheated steam vacuum kiln (1000 fbm capacity)
- Composites panel production and laminating facilities for MDF,
particleboard, OSB, plywood and LVL
- Specialised equipment for face-, edge- and end-gluing solid
wood (including finger-jointer and R/F press)
- RFS high frequency edge-glue panel press
- Portable radio frequency applicator for glue curing
- Chop-saw, straight-line rip-saw (board scanner and optimising
software, edger with movable blade, cross-cutter)
- Moulding machine with 5 heads
- Conditioning chambers for tests requiring temperature and humidity
exposure and control
- Automated warp measurement table for composite and solid wood
panels
